Orvieto sits atop a lava shelf with the most expeditious route up and down being an inclined railway.  The Italian “funicolare” consists of two cars equidistant on a cable each serving as a counterweight to the other.  As one rises, one falls.  They share the same track but since they’d meet in the middle there is a short distance with two tracks where they pass.
